Weekly European Agenda 02/10/2023
This week, a plenary session is taking place in the European Parliament in Strasbourg where MEPs will discuss and vote on different initiatives, including the Media Freedom Act. On Monday, the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety will hold a hearing with Wopke Hoekstra, Commissioner designate for Climate Action. The College of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday is expected to present a communication on critical technologies. The third meeting of the European Political Community, which is set to take place on Thursday, will be followed by the informal meeting of the European Council on Friday. EU enlargement and defence capabilities are expected to be among the main topics discussed.
European Parliament
On Monday, the Committee on Budgets will vote on the EU Budget for 2024. During the Plenary session on Tuesday, MEPs will adopt their position on a draft of the Media Freedom Act which aims to strengthen the independence of EU media. On Wednesday, the plenary debates will focus on the adoption of a comprehensive European pact on asylum and migration, EU-China relations following the anti-subsidy probe, and the authorisation to use glyphosate in the EU. On Thursday, MEPs will vote on the approval of the appointment of Wopke Hoekstra as a Commissioner for Climate Action and Maroš Šefčovič for the role of Executive Vice-President for the European Green Deal.
European Council
On Thursday, the leaders of 47 states are invited to the third meeting of the European Political Community, which will focus on finding solutions to make Europe more resilient, prosperous and geostrategic. On Friday, the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU will host an informal meeting of the heads of state or government in preparation for the upcoming European Council planned for 26-27 October.
European Commission and High Representative
Starting on Monday, President Von der Leyen is set to meet with the Chairs of the European Parliament political groups. On Tuesday, Vice-President Jourová will meet with Petr Pavel, President of the Czech Republic in Strasbourg, while Commissioner Hahn will meet with Raffaele Fitto, Minister for European Affairs of Italy. Commissioner Wojciechowski will arrive in Greece to visit regions and communities affected by recent wildfires and floods on Thursday.
