Weekly European Agenda 23/10/2023
This week, designated as the European Gender Equality Week, will feature discussions on mainstreaming gender equality in the European Union policies in multiple European Parliament committee meetings. On Wednesday, the Committee on Constitutional Affairs will vote on the Proposals of the European Parliament for the amendment of the Treaties. On Thursday, the EU heads of state or government will commence the European Council meeting in Brussels, where the discussions are expected to centre around the topics of Ukraine, Multiannual Financial Framework 2021-2027, economy, migration, and the situation in Israel and Gaza.
European Parliament
On Monday, the Civil Liberties Committee will adopt its conclusions on whether Frontex is complying with fundamental rights, following up on a fact-finding investigation. On Tuesday, the Environment Committee will adopt its position on a draft bill introducing new sustainability requirements for the use and reuse of packaging. On Wednesday, the Industry Committee will adopt its position on the Net-Zero Industry Act, which aims to help the transition to a climate-neutral economy. On Thursday, the Civil Liberties Committee will adopt its position on a draft bill aimed at fighting the dissemination of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) and protecting children online.
Council of Ministers
EU Ministers will convene for the Foreign Affairs Council on Monday to discuss the Russian aggression against Ukraine and the situation in Palestine and Israel. On Tuesday, the General Affairs Council will hold a country-specific discussion within the annual rule of law dialogue framework. This will be followed by the meeting of the EU leaders and social partners for the Tripartite Social Summit on Wednesday. In parallel to the European Council, the EU Ministers of the Euro zone Member States will gather for the Euro Summit.
European Commission and High Representative
On Monday, Vice President Věra Jourová will speak at the “Vote for the Future of Europe: support for participation and turnout for the 2024 elections to the European Parliament.” During the College meeting on Tuesday, the EU Commissioners are expected to deliberate the European Wind Power Package and the Report on investments in clean technologies among other things. On Thursday, Vice-President Schinas will begin his mission in Sao Paolo, Brazil.
