Weekly European Agenda 18/11/2024
This week, multiple European Parliament committee meetings will take place in Brussels, along with an extraordinary plenary session on Tuesday, to mark 1000 days of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. On Monday and Tuesday, President Ursula von der Leyen will participate in the G20 Leaders' Summit, in Rio de Janeiro. Also on Monday, the Foreign Affairs Council will gather ministers to discuss the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, after an informal exchange of views with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Sybiha, via videoconference.
European Parliament
On Monday, the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) will receive a presentation of the 2024 Enlargement Package by Olivér Várhelyi, Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement. On Tuesday, Volodymyr Zelensky will address Members of the European Parliament during the extraordinary plenary session. On Wednesday, the Subcommittee on Public Health (SANT) will hold a public hearing on public health challenges in view of children and young people’s wellbeing.
Council of Ministers
On Monday, the Agriculture and Fisheries Council will bring together ministers to discuss the situation of agricultural markets and commodities, based on information from the European Commission and Member States. On Tuesday, the defence segment of the Foreign Affairs Council will discuss EU military support to Ukraine, and hold an informal exchange of views with the Minister of Defence of Ukraine Rustem Umerov and the advisor to President Zelenskyy on Strategic Affairs Alexander Kamyshin, via videoconference, as well as NATO Secretary-General, Mark Rutte, who will join ministers in person. Also on Tuesday, the General Affairs Council will gather ministers to start preparations for the European Council meeting on 19-20 December. As part of the annual rule of law dialogue, ministers will also hold a country-specific discussion.
European Commission and High Representative
On Monday, Vice-President Margaritis Schinas will deliver opening remarks at the Madrid Investment Forum. On Thursday, Vice-President Vĕra Jourová will speak at the Safer Internet Forum 2024, in Brussels. On Friday, Commissioner Didier Reynders will meet with Adam Szłapka, Minister for European Affairs, Dariusz Korneluk, national prosecutor, Adam Bodnar, Minister of Justice, and representatives of Polish judges and prosecutors, in Warsaw.
