Weekly European Agenda 25/11/2024

This week, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) will meet in Strasbourg for Plenary debates and votes on several issues, including on the election of the College of Commissioners. On Wednesday, EU Commissioners will gather in Strasbourg to unveil the European Semester Autumn Package. On Thursday, the Competitiveness Council will bring together ministers to approve Council conclusions on the future of European competitiveness. The conclusions consist of industry ministers’ responses following the publication of the Draghi report entitled 'The future of European competitiveness'.



European Parliament

On Monday, MEPs will hold a debate on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. MEPs will also discuss the outcome of the UN Biodiversity Conference 2024 in Cali, Colombia (COP16). On Wednesday, MEPs will hold a debate on recent legislation targeting LGBTQI persons and the need for protecting the rule of law and a discrimination-free Union.  

Council of Ministers

On Monday, the Education, Youth, Culture and Sport Council will gather ministers responsible for youth and education to discuss a range of topics. Ministers for youth are expected to approve conclusions on providing ‘glocal’ opportunities for young people living in rural and remote areas and will discuss the evolving demographic trends shaping opportunities for rural youth. On Thursday, ministers in the General Affairs Council (GAC) will hold a policy debate on strengthening the key assets of cohesion policy and how to improve the shared management of cohesion funds in line with the principle of subsidiarity in the future. 

European Commission and High Representative

On Monday, Commissioner Dider Reynders will participate via videoconference in the 13th United Nations Forum on Business and Human Rights. On Wednesday, Commissioner Ylva Johansson will give a keynote address at the European Conference on Drug-Related Violence hosted by the European Union Drugs agency in Brussels. On Thursday, Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski will meet with Sonsoles García, Minister of Production, Foreign Trade, Investment, and Fisheries of Ecuador.
