European People’s Party: Using European open data for better storytelling
By providing easy and free access to data, the European Union wants to encourage innovation and unleash further economic potential. The EU institutions already have an extensive catalogue of open datasets, covering many different aspects – including Politics, Law, Transparency and Finance – which can be retrieved through the EU Open Data Portal. Moreover, this year saw the first Diplohack Brussels, hosted by the Council of the European Union and the Netherlands Presidency. At the same time, the rise in open data has enabled a few, innovative journalists to tell powerful stories and to back them up with interactive graphics.
On 23-24 November, the EPP Group in the European Committee of the Regions brings together journalists, data experts and young media makers to the ninth edition of its Winter University, to share experiences of data journalism and the potential of EU open data to break stories, in an informal and interactive setting.
The event will conclude with a debate on the links between open data and data journalisms contribution to the transparency of government.
