ALDA: Crossing the ocean to share knowledge on deliberative democracy
ALDA reached the United States to take part in the 2019’s edition of the “Deliberative Democracy Exchange” – DDEX 2019, hosted by Kettering Foundation, the US non-profit operating foundation specialised in cooperative research in the field of democracy.
Anna Ditta, Project Development Officer at ALDA, attended the event, which brings together civil society organisations, local authorities, academicians and journalists coming from over 140 countries around the world. During this one-week gathering, participants shared experiences and knowledge around the complex and fascinating topic of deliberative democracy.
What does deliberative mean? Following the President of Kettering Foundation, Mr. David Mathews’ clarifying words, “deliberation is the capacity of judgment. Every human being holds this capacity. Our role is to get people discover their resources and abilities to deliberate on issues which are crucial for the entire community”.
Not only discussion and exchange of good practices, the Kettering Foundation shared insights from its research, including conceptual and practical approaches to foster democratic engagement.
ALDA, together with the LDAs, is very excited and proud to share its experiences and learn about deliberative democracy and citizens’ engagement from the perspective of participants coming from different background.
