EM Croatia Round Table: A Europe that Develops

European Movement Croatia organized a roundtable entitled A Europe that develops, on Thursday, February 20th, 2020, at 15.50h, at the Europe House Zagreb (Jurišićeva 1/I), focusing on the first out of four key elements of Croatia’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2020.

Croatia’s Presidency of the Council of the EU program entitled Strong Europe in world of challenges is based on four pillars: A Europe that develops, connects and protects and is influential on the global scene. As the first out of four priorities, “A Europe that develops”, this roundtable wanted to emphasize the importance of promoting a balanced and sustainable development facing the new global challenges and demographic change. The European Union is confronted with a number of internal and external challenges, those predictable and less predictable, which put the need for Member States to find common solutions and work together.

The future of the Union’s competitiveness lies in growing digitalisation, investment in research and development, the single market as well as a commitment to quality education, which ultimately leads to better working and living conditions.

Presiding over the Council of the European Union is a historic moment and a challenge for Croatia as well as an opportunity for its international affirmation. Thus, Croatia has a unique opportunity to express and strengthen its European path. It is also an opportunity to present the country in the best possible light and to sensitize the European public to European topics. The Croatian Presidency of the EU Council has aligned its work priorities with the Strategic Agenda and Croatian national

priorities and will continue to work on addressing internal and external challenges in line with them.

The participant speakers of the round table were:

  • Ms. Ana Odak, Assistant Minister, Ministry of Regional Development and EU Funds;
  • Mr. Mario Antonić, State Secretary, Ministry of Economy, Entrepreneurship and Crafts;
  • Mr. Marko Babić, Assistant Director, Sector for International Affairs and EU, Croatian Chamber of Commerce;
  • Ms. Sanja Tomičić, Executive Director, International Relations Division, Croatian National Bank.
The opening speech was delivered by Ms Nataša Owens, President of the European Movement Croatia - European House Zagreb, Vice-President of the European Movement International.

The moderator was Ms. Violeta Simeonova Stanicic, Head of the European Parliament’s Office in Croatia.
