Europe Day 2018
The 9th May marks a special occasion in the European calendar- on this very day, 68 years ago, in the aftermath of a war which devastated Europe, Robert Schuman issued his now famous declaration calling for the creation of a coal and steel community. In Europe’s darkest hours, his proposals laid the groundwork for a lasting peace and prosperity which still endure on the continent to this day.
In commemoration of this seminal moment, the European Movement International and its’ member councils are informing, energizing, and uniting Europe’s citizens young and old. On this special day, discussion, debate, exhibitions, music, games and many other activities are taking place from Finland to Spain, from Turkey to Ireland, in cities, towns and villages across the Union and beyond.
With over 40 other events organized by our network, this Europe Day is even bigger than the last. In Dublin, a large-scale citizens dialogue sees reflection on citizens engagement on the future of Europe; in Belgrade, EM members are taking to the streets with local radio to meet and chat with ordinary citizens about what Europe means to them; in Berlin, EM Germany is honouring the day by recognising the contribution of women in Europe with its “Women’s Europe – Germany Prize” awards ceremony and in Vienna, Austrian Commissioner Johannas Hahn is meeting with interested parties to discuss the geopolitical challenges facing Europe and the upcoming Austrian presidency.
