METRO supports the German volunteering award
On 23 November, the 8th gala event for the awarding of the German prize for voluntary service in the categories vocational training, education, humanity, life’s work and the special prize took place in Potsdam. Under the patronage of Ms. Elke Büdenbender, the wife of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, outstanding initiatives were honoured and awarded €10,000 each by the main sponsors DB-Netze, Alpine Finanz, Berlin-Brandenburg Airport and METRO.
In addition, on this evening the special prize “30 years fall of the Berlin Wall” was awarded to Marianne Birthler, pioneer of the peaceful revolution in 1989 in the GDR, minister and long-standing federal commissioner for the Stasi files. The special prize for her life’s work went to Sabine Werth, “The Mother of the Food Banks”, as Bishop Christian Stäblein (EKD Brandenburg) called her in his moving award speech. METRO Germany, represented by Guido Mischok and METRO AG, represented by Maria Heider, were on stage several times as presenters and sponsors. They received a lot of praise for our commitment in the category of humanity, as the main sponsor of the food banks, but also for our commitment in many other METRO AG countries, our “Care & Share” programme as well as our unambiguous attitude with regard to diversity, respect, humanity and against populism and protectionism. Guido Mischok also introduced the evening’s chefs, who enchanted the guests with culinary delicacies from METRO Germany.
