More Courage for European Solutions in Migration | Vice President of European Movement Germany Comments on Salzburg Summit

The informal summit of European Union leaders started today in Salzburg. One of its core issues, next to internal security and Brexit, is migration. Manuel Sarrazin, member of the German Bundestag and vice president of the European Movement Germany, demands European solutions on the question of migration:

“Europe will only be able to tackle the challenges of migration in solidarity. Whether it is about safeguarding borders, the protection of human rights in countries of origin and transit countries, a fair distribution and fast proceedings under the rule of law inside the EU:  we need more courage for European solutions to create quicker and better outcomes.”

One of the European Movement Germany’s core Political Demands, concluded by its 244 member organizations, centres on migration: “Asylum and migration policy in Europe must be fundamentally reformed to ensure a fair distribution of refugees which also adheres to consistent standards and follows the principle of solidarity.”

The EU summit was initiated by the Austrian government, which has made migration one of its main priorities during its European Union presidency under Chancellor Sebastian Kurz.

“Kurz can and has to deliver” said Bernd Hüttemann, vice president at EMI, on German television ZDF heute Journal as a plea to the Austrian presidency.
