SGI Europe – Strategic Foresight Report 2022: SGIs will be central to ensuring a fair and sustainable twin transition

On Wednesday 29 June 2022, the European Commission presented its 2022 Strategic Foresight Report (SFR), “Twinning the green and digital transitions in the new geopolitical context”. This third edition of the Strategic Foresight Report identifies ten critical areas of action to maximise synergies and consistency between the EU’s climate and digital policies.

Commenting on the SFR 2022, Valeria Ronzitti, SGI Europe General Secretary, said:

“By their nature, services of general interest are at the heart of this twin transition: both as employers and as providers of essential services, SGI Europe members are key facilitators for genuinely fair and sustainable transitions. To that aim, we welcome the focus of the SFR 2022 on fairness, the need to prepare for new jobs via up- and re-skilling, and the significant investment needs. Those priorities directly echo the main concerns of SGI employers and providers.”

“This new Strategic Foresight Report addresses a pivotal question for the future of the European Union. Achieving the right twinning of the green and digital transitions while reinforcing the EU’s open strategic autonomy and resilience should now be our top overarching priority. The Report rightly identifies current challenges and opportunities and provides pathways to ensure that the two transformational shifts mutually reinforce each other.”

“SGI Europe now calls for better integration of the Foresight approach in the EU decision-making process. We welcome the anticipated publication: the key messages of the Strategic Foresight Report should now better feed the upcoming State of the EU address, the Commission Work Programme 2023. Further integration with overarching ongoing processes – such as the follow-up of the Conference on the Future of Europe and the Better Regulation agenda, via the Fit-for-Future platform – should now be reinforced.”
