Weekly European Agenda 24/06/2024

The newly elected MEPs will continue to meet to form political groups. The new legislative term will begin with MEPs resuming work on legislative files not finished in the 2019-2024 term. On Monday, the Agriculture and Fisheries Council will gather ministers to seek to approve a set of conclusions on the future of agriculture in the EU. On Wednesday, EU Commissioners will meet to present and discuss the Convergence Report 2024. On Thursday and Friday, the European Council will bring together EU heads of state and government to discuss Ukraine, Middle East, security and defence, competitiveness and the next institutional cycle.



European Parliament

The new legislative term will officially start on 16 July, the first day of the new Parliament’s first plenary session in Strasbourg. During the weeks after the elections, the newly elected MEPs will form political groups according to shared political beliefs. Groups will hold meetings to decide on their composition before the first new plenary meeting. During the first plenary session, MEPs will elect their new President, vice-presidents and quaestors, as well as decide on the number of MEPs that will be sitting in each parliamentary committee. 

European Council

On Thursday and Friday, the European Council will bring together EU heads of state and government to discuss Ukraine, Middle East, security and defence, competitiveness and the next institutional cycle.  

Council of Ministers

On Monday, the Foreign Affairs Council will bring together Ministers in Luxembourg to discuss the Russian aggression against Ukraine, after an informal exchange of views with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba, via videoconference. On Tuesday, the General Affairs Council will gather ministers to continue preparations for the European Council meeting on 27 and 28 June 2024 by discussing draft conclusions. 

European Commission and High Representative

On Monday, Vice-President Vera Jourová will speak at the conference on Czech priorities in the EU organised by Euractiv in Prague, while on Tuesday, Vice-President Dubravka Šuica will participate in the General Affairs Council meeting in Luxembourg. On Friday, Vice-President Margaritis Chinas will participate in the closing ceremony of the EuroPride 2024 in Thessaloniki.
