Weekly European Agenda 08/07/2024

The newly elected MEPs will continue to meet to form political groups and prepare for next week’s plenary session. The new legislative term will begin with MEPs resuming work on legislative files not finished in the 2019-2024 term. On Monday, Commissioner Josep Borell will meet with official authorities in Djibouti. On Thursday and Friday, the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU will host the informal meeting of environment ministers. Discussions will focus on climate and environmental issues such as preparations for COP29, circular economy competitiveness, resilient water management, transboundary water and air pollution and EIB green financing.



European Parliament

The new legislative term will officially start on 16 July, the first day of the new Parliament’s first plenary session in Strasbourg. During the weeks after the elections, the newly elected MEPs have been forming political groups according to shared political beliefs. Groups have been holding meetings to decide on their composition before the first new plenary meeting. During the first plenary session, MEPs will elect their new President, vice-presidents and quaestors, as well as decide on the number of MEPs that will be sitting in each parliamentary committee. 

Council of Ministers

On Monday and Tuesday, the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU will host the informal meeting of competitiveness ministers. On Thursday and Friday, the Hungarian Presidency will host the informal meeting of environment ministers. Discussions will focus on climate and environmental issues such as preparations for COP29, circular economy competitiveness, resilient water management, transboundary water and air pollution and EIB green financing. 

European Commission and High Representative

On Monday, Commissioner Johannes Hahn will meet with Mihály Varga, Minister of Finance of Hungary and Péter Benő Banai, State Secretary, Ministry of National Economy of Hungary in Budapest. On Tuesday, Vice-President Margaritis Schinas will deliver a keynote speech at the Egypt National Day reception organised by the Embassy of Egypt in Belgium. Also on Tuesday, Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra will receive members of the Dutch Parliamentary Committee on Economic Affairs and Climate Policy in Brussels.
