Weekly European Agenda 19/01/2026

This week, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) will gather in Strasbourg for plenary debates and votes on several issues, including on the programme of activities of the Cypriot Presidency and a stronger and more sovereign Europe amid rising geopolitical tensions and continuous threats to the rules-based order. On Tuesday EU Commissioners will gather in Strasbourg to unveil several new initiatives: the Digital Networks Act, the Cybersecurity Act, and the Anti-racism strategy. On the same day, ministers in the Economic and Financial Affairs will receive a presentation of the work programme for the first semester of the year by Cypriot Presidency and will exchange views on the state of play of the economic and financial impact of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.



European Parliament

On Tuesday, MEPs will receive a presentation on the programme of activities of the Cypriot Presidency. On Wednesday, they will have a joint debate on a stronger and more sovereign Europe amid rising geopolitical tensions and continuous threats to the rules-based order. On Thursday, MEPs will discuss drones and new systems of warfare – the EU’s need to adapt to be fit for today’s security challenges. On the same day, they will vote on a motion of censure on the Commission.

Council of Ministers

On Tuesday, ministers in the Economic and Financial Affairs will receive a presentation of the work programme for the first semester of the year by Cypriot Presidency and will exchange views on the state of play of the economic and financial impact of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. From Wednesday to Friday the Cypriot Presidency is hosting an informal meeting of ministers for Justice and Home Affairs Ministers to discuss issues related to returns, the Schengen area, asset recovery, the cross-border return of illegally removed cultural objects and the treatment of adolescents and young adults within the criminal justice system in Lefkosia.

European Commission and High Representative

On Monday, Commissioner Maria Luís Albuquerque will attend the Eurogroup meeting. On Tuesday, President Ursula von der Leyen will deliver a Special Address at the World Economic Forum, in Davos. On Wednesday, Commissioner Jessika Roswall will meet with Alicia Bárcena Ibarra, Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources of Mexico, in Davos. On Thursday, Commissioner Glenn Micallef will meet with Séamus Boland, President of the European Economic and Social Committee, in Brussels.
