This week, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) will gather in Strasbourg for plenary debates and votes on several issues, including on European defence and competitiveness. On Tuesday EU Commissioners will gather in Strasbourg to unveil two new initiatives: the action plan against cyberbullying, and the action plan on drone security and counter-drone security. On Wednesday, ministers in the Foreign Affairs Council (Defence) will exchange views on the EU's support for Ukraine, focusing on defence innovation cooperation. On Thursday, the European Council is gathering heads of state and government for an informal leaders' retreat to discuss competitiveness.
European Parliament
On Tuesday, MEPs will receive a statement from the Commission on building a stronger European defence in light of an increasingly volatile international environment. On Wednesday, MEPs, together with the Commission and the Council, will engage in a joint debate on urgent actions to invigorate EU competitiveness, expand the EU Single Market, and mitigate the cost of living. On the same day, there will be a debate on the state of the rule of law in the US and Slovakia. On Thursday, MEPs will have a debate on EU priorities for the 70th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women Rule.
European Council
On Thursday, the European Council is gathering heads of state and government for an informal leaders' retreat to discuss competitiveness.
Council of Ministers
On Wednesday, ministers in the Foreign Affairs Council (Defence) will discuss the EU's support for Ukraine, focusing on defence innovation cooperation, in the presence of Ukraine's Minister of Defence. On Thursday and Friday, the Cypriot Presidency will host an informal meeting of the Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council configuration (EPSCO), in Lefkosia. The meeting will focus on the European Anti-Poverty Strategy and the European Union’s overarching objective of eradicating poverty. Ministers will also address the major challenges associated with ensuring access to high-quality Long-Term Care that meets the evolving needs of ageing.
European Commission and High Representative
On Monday, President Ursula von der Leyen will receive Manfred Weber, Iratxe García-Pérez and Valérie Hayer, Chairs of the European People’s Party, the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats and the Renew Europe Groups in the European Parliament, in Strasbourg. On Wednesday, Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto will meet with Robert Fico, Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, in Bratislava. On Thursday, President Ursula von der Leyen will participate in the informal EU leaders' retreat, in Alden Biesen. Commissioner Andrius Kubilius will participate in the Munich Security Conference, in Munich.
