Democracy Alive 2025: The Brussels Summit
The Democracy Alive Summit, organised by the European Movement International (EMI), will gather political leaders, policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, social partners, NGOs and organised civil society to explore the intersection of digital technologies and democracy—and the profound implications for the EU’s fundamental values. Topics will include the ongoing debate on regulation versus deregulation of digital platforms, strategies to combat disinformation and foreign interference, and how digital technologies and social platforms can be better adapted, developed and designed to be rooted in the EU’s fundamental values and thus used as tools to strengthen democracy.

European Council 


Monday 19 May

EU-UK summit
António Costa, President of the European Council, and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, will be meeting with Keir Starmer, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom for the first EU-UK summit since the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. High Representative Kaja Kallas and Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič will also participate. The summit will be an opportunity to demonstrate a common stance in working together for peace and security in Europe and to establish a new strategic partnership.

Council of Ministers 


Tuesday 20 May

Foreign Affairs Council
The Council will discuss EU military support for Ukraine, after an informal exchange of views with the Minister of Defence of Ukraine Rustem Umerov, via videoconference, and in the presence of the NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. EU ministers will also hold a discussion on the implementation of the White Paper for European Defence – Readiness 2030, and the ReArm Europe Plan.

Wednesday 21 May

3rd European Union – African Union Ministerial Meeting
Foreign affairs ministers of the European Union and the African Union will meet for the third time to take stock of progress made since the sixth EU-AU Summit of February 2022. Ministers will exchange views on the EU-AU partnership and how to further strengthen cooperation in this landmark year marking the 25th anniversary of their enduring and unique partnership.

Thursday 22 May

Competitiveness Council
Ministers will hold a policy debate on how to make tailor made industrial policies for traditionally strong industries. Ministers will also hold a second policy debate on how to ensure business friendly regulations during the legislative process from its very beginning. Additionally, the Commission will make a first presentation about the 2025 single market strategy, which was part of the Competitiveness compass and whose adoption was planned for the second quarter of 2025.

Friday 23 May

Competitiveness Council
Ministers will discuss the mid-term evaluation of ‘Horizon Europe: lessons learned and looking forward to the next Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (FP 10)’ which was adopted on 30 April 2025. Ministers are also expected to approve Council conclusions on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in science that calls for a comprehensive strategy to boost the uptake of AI in science, with an ethical, sustainable, inclusive and human-centric approach.

Trade and sustainability: Reciprocity in agri-food systems for a fair green transition
The EESC will hold an online event in the framework of its Sustainable Development Observatory (SDO) on the link between trade policy and sustainability, with a particular focus on agri-food systems. Through panel discussions, EESC members, representatives of the European institutions and of civil society will exchange views on the role of reciprocity in achieving a fair green transition.

Citizens can defeat disinformation – Lisbon 2025
This conference in Lisbon is the fourth event on disinformation being hosted by the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) as part of its ongoing project aiming to fight disinformation with the help of civil society. The conference will bring together representatives from the Portuguese authorities, EU institutions and civil society organisations, as well as journalists, social media experts and influencers, academics, students and individual citizens interested in the topic.

The Informal Ministerial Meeting of Ministers responsible for cohesion policy, territorial cohesion and urban matters is an event which will be attended by ministers from EU Member States and representatives of key EU institutions.
