Talking Europe with Marc Lemaître, Director General of DG Research and Innovation
This digital event hosted by European Movement International in partnership with the European Commission will take place from 10:00-11:00 CEST. The series of Talking Europe discussions are organised with the goal of encouraging a debate on the European Union’s work and the effect it has on the lives of citizens, stakeholder from civil society, political institutions and the wider European community. This week’s guest, Marc Lemaître, Director-General of the Directorate General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD), will be discussing the recent work and future activities carried out by DG RTD, including the European Research Area (ERA), the New European Bauhaus (NEB), and the EU Green Deal.

The 60th anniversary of the EU-South Korea diplomatic relations will be the occasion of the 10th EU-Republic of Korea summit. Issues such as peace and stability, economy and trade, and sustainable development are on the agenda.

Monday 22 May

Foreign Affairs Council
EU Foreign Affairs Ministers are expected to discuss Russian aggression against Ukraine, exchange views on the Western Balkans and the Horn of Africa, and be informed about current affairs.

Monday 22 – Tuesday 23 May 

Competitiveness Council
On Monday, topics on the agenda include: Ecodesign, where ministers are expected to adopt a general approach for the regulation establishing a framework for setting ecodesign requirements for sustainable products. Long term competitiveness is also a topic, where the Communication of the Commission will propose to close the gap in productivity between the EU economy and its global competitors in areas such as innovation, production and implementation of advanced technologies. The single market at 30 and beyond will be another topic, as well as a debate on the Critical Raw Materials Act. Other topics include a presentation by the Commission on the Net-Zero Industry Act, a presentation on the point of view of the EU legislation and design protection, and a presentation of the work programme for the Spanish Presidency. On Tuesday, knowledge security is on the agenda, and ministers will hold a debate on knowledge security and responsible internationalisation. In the afternoon, EU Space Policy in a New Geopolitical Landscape is the topic, and a policy debate on the New Space and the vulnerabilities of a dependency on space-based services will be held.

The Defence Ministers are expected to discuss the EU support to Ukraine as well as to be informed on current affairs.

Thursday 25 May

Foreign Affairs Council (Trade)
The state of play of the trade relations with the United States will be high on the agenda for this meeting. Ministers are also expected to address recent development in EU-China trade relations, and will also inform about the preparations for the World Trade Organization (WTO)’s 13th Ministerial Conference (MC13). The ministers will also focus on the ongoing bilateral trade negotiations during a working lunch.

EU and UK Financial Services Regulation Post-Brexit – Partnership event
The consequences of Brexit have hit the financial sector especially hard as the UK is now outside of its regulatory framework. During this event, the panelists are expected to discuss recent trends in the financial sector across the Channel, including divergence between the EU and the UK, and the threats posed by this divergence for financial stabiolity and the risks for further fragmentation.

Tuesday 23 May

Bank crisis management and deposit insurance scheme. A step towards the completion of the Banking Union
The Banking Union is still incomplete, and in treponse to this, the Eurogroup published a statement in June 2022 inviting the European Commission to propose a reform to strengthen the bnk crisis management and deposit scheme (CMDI) framework. The aim of this hearing is to discuss the current framework on resultion and insolvency, supervision, and bank deposit insurance scheme, and the reform of it.

Thursday 25 May

Health, Care and Prosperity after COVID-19: Swedish and European perspectives
Taking place in Stockholm, Sweden, this conference of the Civil Society Organisations’ Group of the European Economic and Social Committee will explore Swedish and European perspectives on health, care and prosperity post COVID-19. Some questions to be addressed are: What was the impact of the pandemic on European health systems? Why do we need European cooperation in the health and care sectors?

The transition to a sustainable food chain with special emphasis put on effective environmental and climate measures will be of focus during this conference. There will be experience exchanges from implementation of the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy in the Member States.

FRA will take part in a conference on innovation titled ‘Innovation Days’ which will entail discussions on artificial intelligence (AI) and ethics. FRA is expected to present its work on AI and fundamental rights.

Protecting child rights in transnational procedures
FRA will give a presentation on the application of good practices to future relocation schemes in a meeting taking place in Malta. FRA will be a part of the EU Asylum Agency’s joint thematic meeting on protecting child rights in transnational procedures.

Wednesday 24 – Friday 26 May 

FRA joins annual Computers, Privacy and Data Protection conference
FRA will host aa panel on protecting child rights in the age of algorithms. Later that day, FRA will also be a speaker during a sesion on interoperability in EU border management systems and criminal databases. FRA will also be a panellist during a session on surveillance systems and lessons learned from the Covid-19 pandemic.

The focus of the conference will be on investment needs and priorities for Portugal and Spain. It will bring together economists, policymakers, and representatives from financial institutions and the business community.
