Council of Ministers 


Monday 27 January

Agriculture and Fisheries Council
Ministers will exchange views on the proposed regulation on cross-border enforcement of the EU rules on unfair trading practices in the agricultural and food supply chain, as well as on the proposed regulation amending the common market organisation as regards the strengthening of the position of farmers in the food supply chain. The Polish presidency will also give a public presentation of its work programme and outline its main priorities in the field of agriculture and fisheries for the coming six months.

Foreign Affairs Council
EU Foreign Affairs Ministers will discuss the Russian aggression against Ukraine, after an informal exchange of views with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Sybiha, via videoconference. The Council will also have a discussion on the latest developments in the Middle East, including Syria.

Tuesday 28 January

General Affairs Council
Ministers responsible for European affairs will meet in Brussels in public session to hear a presentation of the priorities of the Polish presidency with a focus on those falling within the remit of the General Affairs Council. Ministers will also hold a country-specific discussion in the framework of the annual rule of law dialogue, focusing on the rule of law situation in Hungary, Portugal, Romania and Slovenia.

The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) will host a high-level debate during the meeting of its Section for Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment (NAT), focusing on the critical role of sustainable food systems in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and advancing Agenda 2030.

The EESC will hold an info session on the “EESC youth delegate to COP selection process”, to reflect on the experience of the current youth delegate in relation to COP28 and COP29, and to explain the application and selection process for the new youth delegate.

European Rural Parliament: mid-term event

EU Local Dialogue: remembering the Holocaust, honouring the Ulma family
In the framework of the 80th anniversary of the of the liberation of the German Nazi concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz, Lorenzo Galligani (IT/ECR), in cooperation with Władysław Ortyl (PL/ECR), host an event dedicated to the commemoration of the Ulma family who bravely fought the Nazi regime in Poland by rescuing persecuted Jewish people.

European Parliament Ambassador School Programme
The European Parliament Ambassador School Programme (EPAS) aims at increasing students’ awareness of European parliamentary democracy, the role of the European Parliament and European values. It also encourages them to actively participate in EU democratic processes. It targets students with diverse educational, social and geographical backgrounds.

Stakeholder Consultation on the CoR opinion “Cohesion policy as a key engine in achieving EU goals and reforms”
The European Committee of the Regions (CoR) is currently drafting an opinion, on “Cohesion policy as a key engine in achieving EU goals and reforms – How to further build on its performance-based approach while respecting decentralisation, partnership and multilevel governance”. In order to prepare this CoR opinion requested by the Polish Presidency of the Council, The rapporteur Ms Isabelle Boudineau (FR/PES), member of the Regional Council of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, would be pleased to meet representatives of relevant stakeholder organisations for a consultation on the theme of the opinion, in order to gather the different points of views and discuss the main issues.

Informal meeting of justice and home affairs ministers
On the first day, Home Affairs Ministers will discuss strengthening EU security in the areas of migration and civil protection and the prevention of organised crime. On the second day, Justice Ministers will discuss challenges to the rule of law and their impact on the principle of mutual trust between Member States.

Conference explores Holocaust denial, distortion and disinformation
FRA’s Director will give introductory remarks at the international conference on ‘Denial, distortion and disinformation: the truth about the Holocaust 80 years after the liberation of Auschwitz’. The Director will also give her views on the challenges and opportunities for combating antisemitism and preserving learning from the Holocaust.
