Agriculture and Fisheries Council
Agriculture ministers will meet in Luxembourg to discuss the responses to the current situation in the agricultural sector, focusing on the measures that have been proposed or taken so far that are aimed at simplifying the common agricultural policy (CAP) and strengthening the position of farmers in the food supply chain; trade-related agricultural issues; and the the annual performance reports submitted by member states to give an overview of the implementation of the CAP in their countries.

The sustainability of the EU agri-food sector with future enlargement
The EESC will hold a public hearing on the sustainability of the EU agri-food sector in the context of future enlargement. The event aims to provide recommendations to ensure that future enlargement of the EU will benefit both farmers in candidate countries and in the EU, while effectively contributing to the achievement of the EU’s sustainability objectives and Agenda 2030.

Tuesday 30 April

Deforestation of the Amazon rainforest
The EESC will host a half-day hybrid public hearing in the framework of its opinion on the Deforestation of the Amazon rainforest – impact on climate change and the global environment; consequences for companies, workers and population. The purpose of the hearing will be to contribute to the EESC own-initiative opinion by collecting suggestions on how to tackle the burning issue of deforestation which affects the whole world and impacts our societies in so many different ways.

Committee of the Regions

9th Enlargement Day
The Enlargement Day is the European Committee of the Regions’ (CoR) annual flagship event on EU enlargement policy dialogue and experience sharing, first held in 2015. With the recent momentum of enlargement policies, encompassing now 10 neighbouring countries, from the Western Balkans to Georgia, Europe is looking to the East and South-East, proposing a concrete plan and a substantial budget to help the candidate countries to rise to the challenge. The CoR helps local and regional authorities in enlargement countries to prepare for EU accession.

Belgian Presidency


Monday 29 April – Tuesday 30 April

Informal General Affairs Council
This meeting will be held against the background of the 20th anniversary of the 2004 enlargement. On Monday, ministers will celebrate this event in the Bozar Centre for Fine Arts. On Tuesday, Ministers will convene to discuss the enlargement process, with particular attention to the need to strengthen the European Union and its toolbox, particularly in the field of the rule of law. Then, discussions will tackle the importance of upholding the rule of law in the Union of the future. Finally, EU Affairs Ministers will address the Future of the EU and exchange views on the steps and reforms that are needed to strengthen the Union’s capacity to act.
