College of Europe: EU-funded project El-Hiwar II: Euro-Arab Policy Dialogue on Climate Change to debrief on COP26

In the framework of the EU-funded project El-Hiwar II, the College of Europe Development Office organised on 30 November and 1 December 2021 an online Policy Dialogue on Climate Change.

This event aimed at contrasting debates and priorities related to climate change in the Arab region with those in Europe.

Debriefing on the recent COP climate summit and assessing to which extent further bi-regional cooperation could be foreseen was the first goal of the policy dialogue. The event also allowed to specifically look into the matter of how to fight climate change while catering to development needs. It was an opportunity to discuss concretely how to support and finance the green transition of economies, while meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This event gathered over 40 stakeholders: staff from the European Union (EU) and from the League of Arab States (LAS) as well as experts, scholars, civil society and international organisations from both regions.
This was a timely moment to talk about climate change: COP26 took place only a few days before and the Arab region will be hosting the next two COPs (next year in Egypt, the following year in the UAE).
El-Hiwar II: Training and Information Course on Euro-Arab Diplomacy, is a project funded by European Commission DG NEAR and implemented by the College of Europe. It is conceived as a dialogue tool for the EU and the LAS to support strengthened work relations and to learn about each other’s functioning, mechanisms and policies.
