EM Germany: Survey reveals that five out of six Germans attach great importance to European politics for the Federal election in 2021

According to a representative survey conducted by Forsa on behalf of EM Germany, 84 percent of Germans state that Europe and European policy should play a major role in the 2021 German Federal election (Bundestagswahl) campaign. Only 15 percent believe the topic to be less important or not important at all. Dr Linn Selle, president of EM Germany, says: “Presenting solutions for European issues will play an important role in winning the election. I expect that the pro-European parties compete for the best ideas for Europe”. The survey reveals a desire for a broad discussion of European policy issues in the run-up to the Bundestag elections across age and party lines.

Nevertheless, the results also indicate that many Germans do not know who is responsible for coordinating Germany’s European policy even though the current rules were put in place before the turn of the century. While 35 percent of respondents think that the German Chancellery and the Federal Foreign Office are in charge, only about a fifth (21%) know that the responsibility lies with the Foreign Office and the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. In this context, Selle demands “a ministerial post for European policy in the Chancellor’s Office” to enhance the effectiveness of European communication and strengthen Europe on Germany’s agenda.
