Weekly European Agenda 11/09/2023
This week, a plenary session is taking place in the European Parliament in Strasbourg where MEPs will discuss and vote on different initiatives, including the EU-Tunisia agreement. The College of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday is expected to discuss the SME relief package and the BEFIT. On Wednesday, President Ursula von der Leyen will deliver the 2023 State of the Union address. An informal ministerial meeting on economic and financial affairs will be held on Friday, focusing on strategic autonomy and strengthening international economic cooperation.
European Parliament
On Monday, MEPs will debate the European Defence Industry Reinforcement through common Procurement Act. On Tuesday, the debate on the EU-Tunisia agreement will take place followed by the vote on the approval of the appointment of Iliana Ivanova as new Commissioner for innovation, research, culture, education and youth. On Wednesday, MEPs will discuss the EU’s relations with Turkey and Belarus, closing the Plenary session with the vote on the report on Parliamentarism, European citizenship and democracy on Thursday.
Council of Ministers
On Friday, the Eurogroup ministers will discuss macroeconomic developments and the selection process of a new ECB Executive Board member. On the same day, the informal ministerial meeting on EU Economic and Financial Affairs will start in Santiago de Compostela focusing on advancing strategic autonomy and strengthening international economic cooperation, particularly with Latin America.
European Commission and High Representative
On Tuesday, Vice-President Margaritis Schinas will meet with Laurence Boone, State Secretary for European Affairs of France and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola. President Ursula von der Leyen is scheduled to deliver the annual State of the Union address on Wednesday. On Thursday, Commissioner Didier Reynders will participate in the Latin American Forum with consumer authorities in Madrid and Commissioner Janez Lenarčič will meet with the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Belgium Hadja Lahbib.
