Weekly European Agenda 16/03/2026
This week, multiple European Parliament committee meetings will take place in Brussels to debate and vote on several issues. On Monday, ministers in the Foreign Affairs Council will discuss the Russian aggression against Ukraine, after an informal exchange of views with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Sybiha, via videoconference. On Tuesday, ministers will meet in the General Affairs Council to start preparations for the March European Council meeting by reviewing draft conclusions. On Wednesday, EU Commissioners will gather in Brussels to unveil several initiatives: the Orientation debate on the review of the Merger Guidelines and the 28th Regime initiative. On Thursday and Friday, the European Council will gather heads of state and government in Brussels.
European Parliament
On Monday, MEPs will hold a structured dialogue with Executive Vice-President Teresa Ribera on the clean and competitive transition. On Tuesday, MEP’s will focus on efforts to strengthen democratic resilience and counter hybrid threats, including in cooperation with international partners. On Wednesday, MEPs will discuss human rights issues linked to Russia’s war against Ukraine, including reports of third-country nationals being forced to fight. On Thursday, MEPs will assess the state of the EU-US trade relations and the impact of global geopolitical developments on economic partnerships.
Council of Ministers
On Monday, ministers in the Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council will hold a policy debate on the European Grids Package, aimed at improving cross-border interconnectivity, boost electrification and speed up permitting for grid infrastructure, while strengthening the resilience and security of cross-border networks. On Tuesday, the Environment Council is expected to approve Council conclusions on the EU bioeconomy strategy and exchange views on strengthening the EU’s role in global environmental negotiations. On the same day, ministers in the General Affairs Council will continue preparations for the March European Council meeting by discussing draft conclusions.
European Commission and High Representative
On Monday, Commissioner Jozef Síkela will receive Daniel Francisco Chapo, President of Mozambique, in Brussels. On Wednesday, Commissioner Hadja Lahbib will take part in the Event organised by Stand Up for Europe “Europe, Get Ready! – Youth Citizens Dialogue on EU Preparedness”, in Belgium. On Thursday, Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva will participate in Fireside chat at The Parliament SMEs Forum: Strengthening Competitiveness in an Uncertain World in Brussels. On the same day and on Friday, High Representative Vice President Kaja Kallas will attend the European Council meeting in Brussels.
