Weekly European Agenda 20/04/2026

This week, the European Parliament committees will meet to discuss, among other things, defence and justice cooperation, and public health issues such as gender inequalities in health and mental health at work. On Tuesday, ministers in the Foreign Affairs Council will address the situation in the Middle East and exchange views on the South Caucasus and the ongoing crisis in Sudan. On Wednesday, EU Commissioners will gather in Brussels to unveil a communication on energy issues. On Thursday and Friday, the European Council will bring together heads of state and government for an informal meeting to discuss the evolving geopolitical situation, in particular developments in Iran and the Middle East, as well as the EU’s long-term budget for 2028–2034.



European Parliament

On Monday, the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) will hold a structured dialogue with Andrius Kubilius, Commissioner for Defence and Space. On the same day, the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) will examine the future of police and judicial cooperation in criminal matters in the European Union, as well as the EU-INTERPOL Cooperation Agreement. On Thursday, the Committee on Public Health (SANT) will discuss psychosocial risks, stress and mental health at work.

European Council

On Thursday and Friday, the European Council will bring together heads of state and government for an informal meeting to discuss the evolving geopolitical situation, in particular developments in Iran and the Middle East, as well as the EU’s long-term budget for 2028–2034 

Council of Ministers

On Tuesday, ministers in the Foreign Affairs Council will discuss Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and address the situation in the Middle East in the light of recent developments in the Iran-related conflict and its wider spillover effects. In addition, the Council will exchange views on the South Caucasus, with a focus on Armenia-Azerbaijan relations ahead of the upcoming European Political Community summit in Yerevan, as well as the situation in Georgia. Finally, ministers will discuss the ongoing crisis in Sudan. On the same day, the Cypriot Presidency will host an informal video conference of transport ministers. Ministers will discuss the impact of recent geopolitical developments in the Middle East on the EU’s transport system and transport sector.

European Commission and High Representative

On Monday, High Representative Vice-President Kaja Kallas will meet Mohammad Mustafa, Prime Minister of Palestine, in Brussels. On Wednesday, Commissioner Michael McGrath will meet the Portuguese Minister for Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, in Lisbon. On Thursday, Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis will meet Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Prime Minister of the Hellenic Republic of Greece, in Greece.
