Europe Day 2023 pre-event
To mark Europe Day 2023, commemorating the Schuman Declaration on 9 May 1950, the EU institutions will organise a wide range of online and on-site activities, providing citizens with the opportunity to discover the EU. On 6 May, the event will happen in Brussels, where EU institutions will open their doors to citizens. Parliament will organise exceptional visits, interactive presentations, games and meetings with its political groups.

Wednesday 3 May – Thursday 4 May  

Informal meeting of employment and social affairs ministers
During the first plenary session, ministers will discuss how transitions are influencing the labour market and, more specifically, how to prevent mismatch between skills and jobs in times of transition. On request by the Swedish Presidency, Eurofound has prepared a background paper as a base for the discussion. The paper outlines some of the key challenges on our labour markets in this regard, and points to some factors for improving the matching of skills and jobs, both in the short and long term. In the second plenary session, ministers will discuss challenges and opportunities related to demographic developments and an ageing population. The purpose of the session is to facilitate an exchange of experience and views on measures that have been taken, or are planned, by the Member States in response to demographic challenges, and how to harness the opportunities to enable adequate and sustainable social protection.

Thursday 4 May

Foreign Affairs Council (Development)
The Foreign Affairs Council, in its development configuration, will be invited to exchange views on the reform of multilateral development banks. Over lunch, ministers will address the global consequences of the war in Ukraine, which will include an informal exchange with the Secretary-General of UNCTAD, Rebecca Grynspan. Under current affairs, the High Representative will address Ukraine, Afghanistan and Sudan. The Commission will provide an update on the Global Gateway in view of the EU-CELAC summit next July under any other business. The meeting will be preceded by an informal working breakfast with EIB President Hoyer.

Thursday 4 May – Friday 5 May

Informal meeting of health ministers
The overall theme of this informal meeting is access to medicinal products. The programme will focus on shortages of medicinal products and crisis preparedness, and more broadly how the EU and its Member States can secure access to medicinal products – both new and existing stock – in daily work in non-crisis times. The meeting will part focus on the importance of restoring balance between accessibility and affordability of medicinal products in the European Union.

Day of the Liberal Professions 2023
On 2 May 2023, the Liberal Professions Category of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) will hold the 7th edition of the European Day of Liberal Professions. This annual event brings together key players from Europe’s liberal professions, as well as key policy makers from the European Commission, European Parliament and Member States. The focus will also be  on the important impetus that the European Year of Skills 2023 can provide for liberal professionals and their employees. Training and lifelong learning are crucial in securing a skilled workforce and can help overcoming the challenges that the green and digital transition bring to employers across the EU. This event will provide a useful forum to discuss how improving skills can help improving Europe’s future.

EU Open Day at the European Institutions
Together with the other EU institutions in Brussels, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) will open its doors in celebration of Europe Day. The EESC Open Day is a rare opportunity to discover the work of the only EU institution representing organised civil society, including employers, workers and other interest groups such as youth organisations, environmentalists, consumers, women’s groups and many more. It is a chance for reflection on what peace, cooperation and solidarity have built and what we hope to achieve in the future.

 Wednesday 3 May

Sustainable forest management – the way to mitigate the course of climate change
​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​On 3 May 2023, alternate CoR member Robert Zeman is co-organising, with main partner Městské lesy Volary s.r.o., a local conference focused on sustainable management of municipal forests. Participants will exchange views on management activities focused on biodiversity, long time stability of forest as a big tool for global warming decreasing. Foresters, including local rural politicians and specialists, will exchange experiences and views.

Improve Project Final Dissemination Event
​The IMPROVE project brings together 8 partners from regions and cities across Europe with the aim to improve the management and implementation of Structural Funds to ensure a better and more efficient delivery of R&D&I policies, with a special focus on the Smart Specialisation Strategies. The IMPROVE Final Dissemination Event aims to inform about the main achievements of the project as well as the current European landscape regarding Smart Specialisation by presenting new initiatives such as the Partnerships for Regional Innovation, the I3 instrument and the S3 Community of Practice.

Event on sustainable artificial intelligence and artificial intelligence for sustainability
The overall aim of this event is to collaboratively identify future opportunities and challenges associated with artificial intelligence (AI) and sustainability. By improving resource efficiency and mitigating climate change impacts, AI has the potential to be a powerful tool for sustainable development. In addition to enhancing environmental sustainability, AI can improve social and economic sustainability by identifying and addressing inequalities and promoting inclusive development. However, it is important to ensure that AI is developed and used in an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable manner. The event will gather leaders and stakeholders from the public and private sectors, academia and civil society to discuss and reflect on how to ensure that the future development of AI is sustainable and enables the green and digital transitions.

European Competition Day
European Competition Day is a conference organised during each Presidency and which gathers representatives of European competition authorities, the European Commission, ministries, politicians, companies, etc. It is intended to provide an opportunity for sharing knowledge, discussions and a chance to dig deeper into issues concerning competition policy, competition enforcement and current competition practices from the courts. Stronger competition in the internal market not only benefits consumers and companies in the form of lower prices and more choice, but can also help to increase the competitiveness of European companies and increase growth.

EIB Board Seminar with Civil Society 2023
The 2023 Board Seminar with Civil Society will take place on Tuesday 2 May 2023 at the EIB offices in Luxembourg and will be open to interested stakeholders* from civil society inside and outside Europe. Similar to previous years, the Board Seminar and the exchanges with civil society representatives will be structured around priorities and themes of mutual interest. This year’s themes reflect two key dimensions of EIB’s activities: EIB Global, and the EIB’s approach to adaptation, environment and biodiversity. Civil society representatives have been invited to moderate the two panel discussions, focusing on ‘Partnering for impact: EIB Global’, and ‘Bending the curve on environmental degradation and biodiversity loss: climate-nature nexus ’. The event will conclude with an open discussion with the EIB Board of Directors on topics of common interest, facilitated by an independent moderator.

Council of Europe Human Rights Day
The first edition of the Council of Europe Human Rights Day will bring together leading experts to discuss the Council of Europe’s impact on human rights in Finland. The thematic focus of this year’s event will be resilience and civil participation at the municipal level with the emphasis on the promotion of human rights, democracy and the rule of law. The event is organised as part of the project Council of Europe Days – Telling the CoE’s Story. Bjørn Berge, Deputy Secretary General, will give a keynote speech introducing the continent’s leading human rights organisation at the opening of the expert seminar.
