About

Ahead of the 2019 European Parliament elections, the European Movement International together with a group of researchers led by Matthew MacWilliams, and with the support of the Open Society Initiative for Europe, conducted a poll (fielded by YouGov) on the drivers of behaviours and attitudes of citizens in 13 European Union member states (representing 75% of the membership of the European Parliament) towards democracy and authoritarianism.

Once the results of the poll were analysed and ready, several Democracy Table events were held from March through May 2019 with the intention to disseminate the findings of our research.

The purpose of the roundtable meetings were to:

1. Share the polling results, country report, and segmentation;
2. Present message frames that can be derived from the polling;
3. Discuss audience building, communications, and campaigns.

The ‘Democracy Table’ was aimed at NGOs and other organisations who want to equip their campaigns, shape their communications and test their narratives.

Democracy Table events were held in:

  • Rome – 28 March 2019
  • Vienna – 2 April 2019
  • Madrid – 4 April 2019
  • Barcelona – 5 April 2019
  • Brussels – 8 April 2019
  • Texel – 11 April 2019
  • Paris – 15 April 2019
  • Tallinn – 2 May 2019
  • Berlin – 8 May 2019
  • Warsaw – 9 May 2019
