On Thursday 24 March, the “Sunflowers for a united Europe together with Ukraine” campaign starts, inviting every person, organisation and work team to sow and nurture sunflowers until 9 May – Europe Day – when a sunflower planting event is planned. The aim of the campaign is to show support for the Ukrainian people, the reconstruction of Ukraine and its integration into the European Union.
“On this day, one month since Russia started the war in Ukraine, we call on society to unite in hope for a better future. Watching and caring for the sunflower seedling, together we will wait for a favourable sky, light and warmth, so that the sunflower can peacefully take root in the ground – just like the Ukrainian people in their free country and in the European Union,” says Kristīne Zonberga, Director of the Latvian Civic Alliance, about the objectives of the campaign, inviting schools, institutions and businesses to get involved.
Andris Gobiņš, President of the European Movement in Latvia, says: “We can learn from Ukraine’s selfless love for its country. Let us bring this love to our cities, homes and backyards. We plant a sun flower today and on Europe Day!”
